![]() You already have shown you want to get into Discworld. Come back later, read it one page a day, whatever. ![]() Thieves of time explains in universe why, but honestly Pterry wrote whatever story delighted him at the moment.įor example Guards Guards is about Vimes and the 1 in a million shot.Įxcept Night watch is also about Vimes, but explains how he started his career, who Reg Shoe really is, and about Vetinari.Īll characters unrelated to each other for the most part, all introduced in random books decades ago, but united with a common lilac once a year in a story written well after their characters were established.ĭiscworld is about all it's stories all at once and never in the right order. Sure you could poke around and make some coherent storylines match some relevant timelines, but many stories were often written before others. So I'm gonna give my usual good news everybody,ĭiscworld specifically has no order. Going Postal, which another person suggested, is also a good faster-paced, mature book without much baggage from other books. Something of a "climax" of the Watch books. People sometimes recommend Night Watch, but it gains a lot of power from knowledge of the characters, imo. If you want to stay with the Watch, I'd jump to Men at Arms or Feet of Clay - still earlier in the series, but much faster paced and less meandering, have clearer "whodunit" elements as well. Also has some good zany silliness and running gags. Introduces the world, has very clear satire elements that reflect the "mature" Pratchett writing, and is thoughtful in its critiques of religion, philosophy, politics, etc. If you don't mind a standalone, I'd suggest Small Gods, which is still my favorite starting recommendation. Shorter, faster-paced, more straightforward, and a little sillier. If you want a book that starts at the beginning of a miniseries, I'd recommend Mort as a better starting point. Guards! Guards! is a bit slow, which is why it isnt always my favorite suggestion as a starting point, despite how many suggest it - I had trouble my first time too, and I had a bunch of Discworld read already. ![]()
